SPEAKER_09Ah, you know what? I wanted to before we before we do anything, um, I wanted to make sure that uh Carriani. Because Carriani said something in his one of his last messages that uh really kind of rubbed me the wrong way. He uh so Carriani sent his uh avid listener to the O'Brien and Doug podcast, uh one one of our oldest friends, and uh he sh occasionally shares music in the um in the text thread. Right. Like for us to check out. Right. And so he shared some music. I'm not gonna say who the music is, uh, because well, what he put after it was, not sure if you guys will like these. My last dude got no reaction. Because he apparently shared some music and we did not react to it at all.

SPEAKER_09I I'm assuming because I mean he shared it. Wanted to get our opinion on it. Oh. So uh I'm not gonna say who this is, but I will tell you, Jeff, it sucks. Okay. No, I'm just kidding. It doesn't suck. There's your reaction, buddy. It doesn't suck. Um uh not my cup of tea, but it was uh it was pretty good. Um I'll share it. I believe the the name of the artist is Very Gently. Well, you know what? Let's while we're right here, while while we can, let's let's do uh Jeff a solid and play one of these songs. Uh maybe you like it, Doug. I don't know. Very gently banned. Um let's do uh let's do literally just a girl. Okay. And you you tell me. I mean, it's it's it's not bad by any stretch. I don't think I'll listen to this one. I kind of like this one. It's very mellow. Very super mellow, super mellow, but really good. I mean great harmonies. Uh the band is uh very gently. It does sound a little similar. Sounds like something I've heard before. Something I've heard before, yeah. But uh I heard I can't remember which one it was that I he sent three. I can't remember which one it was that I listened to, but I I didn't care for it. Um but this is pretty pretty good, actually. There there, Jeff. Uh, we got your reaction. We may not have reacted in the text thread, but there we we we put it on the podcast.

SPEAKER_09Um so there's that. And while I'm thinking of uh songs or or music that I think people should know, uh maybe I've done this before. I was driving in the car today and something came up on on one of my the playlists that I was listening to. Um and uh I didn't want to do like a whole bit on it, but I wanted to play a song that I that I heard come up. We've talked about these guys before, I think. Um wholly underrated. This is the Electric Boys. Do you remember The Electric Boys? All lips and hips or something like that? Um This is a song called Captain of My Soul. I just want you to hear it just for a second. Sorry. I just had to share that because I heard that and I was like, I forgot all about this song. Um that's from their album, uh, I believe it was their debut album, Funko Metal Carpet Ride, which had all lips and hips on it. It was in '89 that came out.
SPEAKER_11That sounds about right.
SPEAKER_09Yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Uh but they were different than everything else that was out in 89. They were very uh um I don't know, f well obviously funky, but uh kind of kind of flower childish. You know, it was it was it was very psychedelic. Hippy-ish. Yeah, they had a song called Psychedelic Eyes.
SPEAKER_10Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Um but anyway, I just get that off my my brain because uh I wanted to electric boys. Electric boys. Uh from Sweden, actually. Sweden. Sweden. Sweden. Um so there. We started off the podcast with some music. There, now we can There we go. Let's go home. Now we now we can dive into all the other stuff.
SPEAKER_10Ah yeah.
SPEAKER_09Um how you been? Good. Good. Yeah. Yeah. Woo! Things are great. I'm about 30 days almost uh away from the end of school.
SPEAKER_11I think we have 26.
SPEAKER_09Do we have 26? Yeah. Yeah. I think we so you must be out like the first week in June. Second week? Second week.
SPEAKER_11I think graduation's like the first Friday of June. Yeah, we are the And the kids are out like that Wednesday or Thursday.
SPEAKER_09We are the Tuesday of the third week.
SPEAKER_11Ah Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Sucks to be you guys. It sure does. Yeah, it sure does. Um so we had our bandorama um concert last night.
SPEAKER_10Ah.
SPEAKER_09Um Myra, my daughter, per uh performed in it. Noise. So that's the bandorama is where they have they do it in the gym because they start with the fifth grade band and they do like the warm up warm-up activities that they they work on. Right. Like beginning band. Then they go to the sixth grade band, and then they play the seventh and eighth grade band, and then they play the high school band, and then at the end they all play a song together or a piece of a song.
SPEAKER_11A big jam session.
SPEAKER_09It's kind of a cluster really because you have three three conductors and they're they're trying to keep everybody on time together uh in a gym that echoes. Yeah. And uh course it was May the fourth. Oh, so they did Star Wars. I will give you a hint as to yeah, as to what uh what they did at the end. They did the Star Wars theme at the end. Um and the Cantina theme was, you know, done in a couple on a couple of uh occasions as well. Um so but you know the I they talked about because it went it went an hour and a half.
SPEAKER_11Really?
SPEAKER_09And it was in a hot gym. So there's there's talk of there's talk of splitting it up next year. There's talk of doing a fifth and sixth grade band night and then a seventh through twelfth band night, which would cut down on the you know. Yeah, it'd be a lot better. It would be a lot better. Yeah. So I don't know if that's gonna happen or not, but it was a success, uh, nonetheless. So I told you that um I picked up a couple CDs at Bull Moose last week. I think it was last week. Um, but I forgot to tell you that so we went down to Bangor for a track meet for my senior. And um his his first event nope, his second event. Uh he injured himself.
SPEAKER_11Doing what?
SPEAKER_09Well, so he did the the long jump and did pretty well, but didn't place or anything, but he he he actually uh PR'd a personal record.
SPEAKER_11Um better than PP.
SPEAKER_09That'd be bad. And then uh he was doing I think it was the four by one hundred. It's a r it was a relay. So he he was the second runner out of four guys. And uh they handed him the baton and he ran, and um I got it on tape, I'm videotaping the whole thing. And just as he passed us, he went ah and grabbed his leg.
SPEAKER_11Did you pull a handy?
SPEAKER_09He pulled something, yeah. And but he kept going and passed passed off the baton. That was dumb. And then and then um collapsed basically um on the track. And uh you know, they came over and took care of him and well so he he was out for the rest of the track meet.
SPEAKER_11Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah. And so he had to go to PT a couple times. Um he's still not able to participate. I think he's got a track meet coming up. I think I'm not sure if he's able to participate or not. They haven't given him the the g the green light. He's been doing other things fine. You know, he's I think it feels better, but whether he's going to run or you know, whatever. Right. Uh so I don't know. So that happened. And then today, I think I was talking to you about how uh we might have to postpone the recording tonight because Myra had her first track meet over in Caribou. Uh and that might go late, so I was gonna have you come later. Well, um this morning she was very nervous about it. And she actually joked. She said, I'll just hurt myself at school so I don't have to do it. Whatever it is. And so And then she did. She did. Did she really? Yes, she did. She didn't do it on purpose. Okay. Luckily the track meet got canceled because of uh the storm system that was running through and they didn't you know thunderstorms, they didn't want to take a chance. So they canceled or delayed it. Sorry, the track meet's gonna be Thursday now. Um but she went home early because at recess she was playing soccer and a uh boy kind of took her out and she well, took her out, but kind of slide tackled her, but her foot went on the ball or something the wrong way or whatever. I think she just rolled her ankle, is what she did. But uh, you know, she she went home and has had her foot on ice all day. So it's just you know, my family is accident prone apparently.
SPEAKER_11So Yeah, they shouldn't be doing track.

SPEAKER_09I will tell you. They should be doing something safer, like I I can't watch the um what do you call them? Hurdles? Hurdles. You like that? That's the international sign for hurdles. Well, you knew what I meant.
SPEAKER_11I know that's what that's I can go to China right now and be like, hurdles? And I'd be like, oh hurdles.
SPEAKER_09I'd be like, yes. Anyway, I can't watch them. I have a hard time watching them because I think Well, I'm just waiting for you know, catch a foot on that thing and just exactly exactly that's and it's gonna hurt, dude. And you know, or even um she's worried, she was worried about uh because they're so close together, the runners are so close together, catching someone's spike in her leg or something. Oh yeah, you know, I mean it's so I but that's that's one event. I watch him obviously, but I I I can't uh it's hard.
SPEAKER_11Well everybody's getting hurt because I was talking to one of one of my kids in Ashland today. She she plays softball. She was like, Doug, guess what happened? I'm like, what? And she's like, I I hurt my knee sliding in the home. And I was like, Well, are you not sliding right? She goes, Yeah, I don't think I'm sliding right. And I was like, Why don't you just go head first? She's like, our coach won't let us go head first. And I was like, I'll talk to your coach anymore.
SPEAKER_09Did she get the run?
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I think so. Well, she didn't really I'm gonna say she did.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11So, you know, happy ending. Right. But you know, you know, I was like, you know, why I I was like, I was like, you need to do something safer, like bull fighting, you know, MMA. So you know, something safe. Right. Okay. Because this is you know, softball's not for you.
SPEAKER_09Right.
SPEAKER_11So she just she kind of just did that health take her and oh Doug.
SPEAKER_09What else was I gonna say? Because we I don't know. We use this podcast to catch up, basically. Yeah, what we do. And you're all invited. What happened this week? I got this. But I did I have this last week?
SPEAKER_11Well, you got it, you had it, but it wasn't down here yet.
SPEAKER_09Oh, okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_11It didn't come down until the end of the podcast.
SPEAKER_09It's big, isn't it? I mean it's huge. It's a huge I bought a um uh crate uh vintage 50 2x12 amplifier. It's uh it's a uh all tube amplifier. I'm being a nerd right now, but uh all all I know is it I plugged it in and it sounds pretty good. It's the basement of the science building. Yeah, it's it it sounds pretty good. It is old. Not really old, but it's in it's in pretty good shape. Um so I'm happy that I have that down here and it's kind of a backup if in case I need it. Yeah. Um it's always good to have a backup. Always good to have a backup. So yeah, that's there's that. Um what else was I gonna tell you? I don't know, man. I don't know either. Um I do have some new music to talk about. Okay. Um and it happens to be uh uh I know that you're not gonna care about either of these.

SPEAKER_09Yeah, it's full moon. So he he has a new song out, uh, as you know. Uh he's been Peter Gabriel has been releasing um uh I don't know, what do you call him? Uh songs. Songs. Shut up. He's been releasing short plays. Um I'm trying to think of oh, his dark side mix and and and uh Oh yeah, and dark side and lightside mixed. Dark side and lightside, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_09And so this is a bright side mix.
SPEAKER_11Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_09Uh from a song called Won't Stand Down, and it looks like no. It looks like it's a political song.
SPEAKER_11Not Peter, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Uh in a statement to his email subscribers, Gabriel described the track as a song to encourage some sort of activism. And that he initially wanted to write something to an organization called the Elders, founded by Nelson Mandela in twenty seven, uh twenty seven. Their currency is not based on military power, economic power, or political power, but just the moral authority they have from having lived extraordinary selfless lives. That's something which I wanted to talk about, write about, and encourage, because it's pretty dark out there in lots of places. And I think we need people who can just nudge both of us uh and our leaders and keep alive some basic values of justice, compassion, and democracy. I hope that they can help us start envisioning a just peaceful and fairer world. That's fair, I guess. Um so this is from his collection OI. Um Won't Stand Down. It's gonna have two versions. Uh we have the bright side version. Um and so let's just let's just play it. It was inspired by Marvin Gay, apparently. I have always been a fan of Marvin Gay, and there was a Cuban element to his song Sexual Healing that I loved and was exploring. It was something in the way that it allowed the rhythm to move that I liked, and I tried to bring an element of that to the song while allowing it to evolve into something different. Uh that is uh Won't Stand Down from the bright side mix. I'm curious as to what the dark side mix of that song would be. Um Everything Sucks. But that is from his um collection OI. SPEAKER_09Uh two new songs from the Rolling Stones. Yeah, I don't care. I knew you were gonna say that.
SPEAKER_11I'm sorry, but it's just it's the Rolling Stones.
SPEAKER_09I just whatever. So their upcoming album is called Foreign Tongues. It's coming out in July, July 10th. And so they've released two songs, Rough and Twisted and In the Stars. Um so we're gonna start with, well, let's see. Uh 2023 Hackney Diamonds was their last release, which I didn't even I mean, I think we plot probably.
SPEAKER_11We I think we played a couple tracks. Yeah, it was you know, it was typical.
SPEAKER_09Yeah. Um let's see. There's guest artists on this album. Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, Robert Smith from The Cure, Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers. Um said the the atmosphere in the room was so creative and the whole band was on top form throughout the whole thing.
SPEAKER_11Wasn't Steve Jordan playing for them now?
SPEAKER_09I think so. Playing drums, yeah. Yeah. I think so. So let's hear a little bit of Rough and Twisted from uh the Rolling Stones! Let me say this about it so far. It's very bluesy. It is very bluesy. But it's also, to me, sonically, different sounding than a Rolling Stones record. A little bit.
SPEAKER_11It's got a fuzz on it.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, like the the mixed, the instrumentation. Well, the instrumentation, not so much, but but the sound of the instruments.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_09It's thicker. And I don't know who produced this. And you're right, it is just a blue song. Yeah, that's all it is. Um but it's kind of getting back to their roots coming up. Yeah, it sounds different than a than a Relic Stones record. I mean, when I say it sounds different, I don't mean the music, uh, the the song itself, but I mean the sound of it. You know, the the Wait, the mix. The mix. Yeah. It sounds it sounds a little different. Sounds weird. Here's another one. This is uh from uh this is from the same album, obviously. It's called In the Stars. Let's see how this one sounds.
SPEAKER_11It's like a 180 from the last one. Really? Yeah, I think that's a good one. It's got a very strong pop sensibility to it.
SPEAKER_09I agree. Uh I dig it. It's not bad. The guitar licks in the beginning.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I like the ooh.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, me too. The guitar licks in the beginning, very stoned.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, always super stoned.
SPEAKER_09Very stoned. Yeah. But the the chorus, you're right. It's got a nice little poppy. Nice little hook.
SPEAKER_11Yeah. Uh I think it's the best part of this song. It's the chorus. I agree.
SPEAKER_09I agree. I almost want to hear it again. Uh hold on. I mean, it's not anything radically different than they've ever gotten.
SPEAKER_11It's not groundbreaking, but that's what you've gotten to know from the stones, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Now it sounds like it's done. Yeah. Right. Yeah, I think I saw Steve Jordan playing drums. Pretty sure anyway. Uh well, that's cool. Uh Foreign Tongues is the new album. And like I said, I I think I said comes out in July. July 10th, is that what I said?

SPEAKER_09Let me ask you this because uh this just came up that that I forgot that we should have talked talked about this. Um The New York Times, you know, that bastion of uh music knowledge, they have released a list of what the 30 greatest living I think it's living American songwriters.
SPEAKER_11Okay.
SPEAKER_09Now you're uh you're gonna just kind of freak when I tell you who's not on the list.
SPEAKER_11I'm gonna probably hate it, I know.
SPEAKER_09Um let me let me just kind of uh we'll go through.
SPEAKER_11Thirty greatest living American Is that what it said?
SPEAKER_09Hold on. 30 greatest living American songwriters, yes. More than 250 music insiders, and six New York Times critics weighed in on who defines the new American songbook. Here in an unranked list are the artists they chose. Nile Rogers. Nile Rogers is from Chic and basically was a producer and he did write a lot.
SPEAKER_10But can you name I don't I don't know anything else?
SPEAKER_09Exactly. Can you name you name me a Nile Rogers song?
SPEAKER_10No.
SPEAKER_09No. The only one I can I can name is LeF Le Chic. LeFique. Or or whatever it is.
SPEAKER_11Oh, yeah, that's that's right up there with you know whatever. So he wrote Good Times.
SPEAKER_04Good times.
SPEAKER_09He wrote that one. Um let's see. Uh the titles tell the story Good Times, I want your love, lost in music, everybody dance, my feet keep dancing, dance, dance, dance, yauza, yawza, yauza.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, none of these songs are like iconic. I mean, they probably are, but as far as songwriting goes, nah, brah.
SPEAKER_09Yep. Um Lucinda Williams. Now, you don't know Lucinda Williams.
SPEAKER_11I've heard the name.
SPEAKER_09Uh I love Lucinda Williams' writing. I cannot stand her singing.
SPEAKER_11Well, good thing it's not 30 greatest American singers. That's true.
SPEAKER_09So uh she she is a fantastic writer. Um you might know a couple of her songs. Uh Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was a fantastic album. Uh, but uh she's along the same lines as John Hyatt. Okay. Okay. Um, let's see. Stevie Wonder. Gotta give him that. Sure. Stevie Wonder. I agree with that. I agree with that. Yep. Stevie Wonder deserves to be on this list. Jay-Z. Nope.

SPEAKER_09Okay, so wait, wait, wait. Let me play. Let me play Devil's Advocate. Why?

SPEAKER_11Yeah. So I mean, you know, whatever. Yeah, so uh I mean, if they want to consider that great songwriting, whatever.
SPEAKER_09Right. Um Reasonable Doubt came out in 1996.

SPEAKER_091996, Brooklyn's Finest, a duet with uh notorious B.I.G. Yeah, I can't really. I'm not saying he's not getting some great songs, but I can't really say anything because I don't know his work.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I I I mean I wouldn't put him up there, but you know, whatever.
SPEAKER_09Right. Uh Paul Simon.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, no question. Yeah, that's that's a gimme. Don't even have to go into that. Taylor Swift. Nope. I might disagree with you.
SPEAKER_11Well, you can just get out of your own house. Hit the bricks, Jack.
SPEAKER_09Greatest living American songwriters. Uh you look at She's had a lot of songs. You look at the uh impact that she's had on the youth of America through her song. Not good. Through her songs. Not good. Well, early songs. Not good. You don't think so? No, man. It's bubblegum.
SPEAKER_11What what does bubblegum make it a bad song? It doesn't make a greatest American songwriter good. Why? Because I said so, mother effer.

SPEAKER_09Um actually, I want to see if um did Ultimate Classic Rock cover that? Um because if they did, then I won't have to look for it because there's a certain button right there. Um there we go. Uh 30. I just want to see because I I saw a short list. Uh nope. They didn't cover it. I can't believe they didn't cover it. Uh Brian and Eddie Holland. Holland, Ozier Holland. Oh, yeah, yeah. Uh easily going on this list. Where do where did our love go? Baby love, come see about me, stop in the name of love. I hear it symphony, all supreme songs. Yeah. Uh they wrote stuff for the four tops. Martha and the Vandelas, Take Me in Your Arms, Free to Pain's Band of Gold, Marvin Gay, you're a wonderful one.

Uh who was more creative than the Fab Four? Exactly. I will go with one of my faves. All you need is love. It kind of fits no matter how you interpret the question. We know we know the friend, yeah, but we didn't know this aspect of the friend's life has been battling uh prostate cancer for at least ten years. Yeah. Uh and has to go in regularly for um treatment. 34 treatments or something like that. Something like that. Yeah. And this person um made a request of um you and I and um cousin Larry. I actually said Miss Judgness too.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, so I'm for I'm involving all four of us.

SPEAKER_11I think so too. This is the first song I ever remember from Bruce Hornsby.
SPEAKER_09And it's such a great this is a this is a uh statement on society. Um but he had his own unique sound.

SPEAKER_09Um that synthesizer in the background. It was it was like on every one of his songs.

SPEAKER_09He's had so we had this is Bruce Hornsby in the range. Uh he's had Bruce Hornsby in the noise makers. Um, the Bruce Hornsby trio. Um a very storied career. Uh, this guy. Um once in a while I get him and Stevie Wynwood mixed up. I could see that. Yeah. Because there's a lot of that synthesizer in the background. You know? Yeah. Um, here's another. I think this was the second single from this album. This is Mandolin Rain. Another great song. Why isn't Bruce Hornsby in the top 30, top 50? Because his name's not Young Thugs. Does this take you back? Oh yeah. Every time I hear horns beats it takes me right back to where I was in 1986 or seven.

SPEAKER_09Alright, so that was the second single. Third single. This is every little kiss. Do you remember this one?

SPEAKER_09Hmm. This one has harmonica from Huey Lewis. Oh, that's the connection. Towards the end of it. Well, they're very good. They were very good friends. Yeah. And he's Huey Lewis is also on another song on the album. You'll you'll recognize this song here in a second. That melody right there is a hook. Are you familiar with this whole album or no? Not really not. Alright, so that was the third single. And I don't know that there were any other singles from that album, but I do know that there were a couple that were in movies. Have you ever seen uh Kevin Bacon movie? Uh I think it was Long uh Long Hot Summer or Long uh Was it was it in that special section? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It was uh it was Kevin Bacon, it was Sean Aston. It was where where these uh teenage boys went on this like hiking trip with with Kevin Bacon, who was a little older than they were. It was like a guide, uh, but he turned out to be kind of like a psychotic dude. Uh long summer um I never saw it, so no.

SPEAKER_09Whitewater Summer. 1987. That's what it was. So Whitewater Summer. Great movie, by the way. Um but the song that I'm gonna play next as soon as I figure out what I'm doing here was featured in that movie, and that is this one. It's called the Wild Frontier. I'm just gonna play a little sample of some other ones from this album. It's called The Long Race. This one is uh uh down the road tonight. This is one that Huey Lewis is on. He actually sings on and plays harmonica. Sounds like a Huey Lewis song. Does it? Well, you know the song uh Jacob's Ladder?
SPEAKER_11Well, it sounds like my baby.
SPEAKER_09Yep. Doing it all for my baby, whatever. But you know the Huey Lewis song Jacob's Ladder, I mean Jacob. Bruce Hornsby wrote that. Oh, did he?
SPEAKER_11Okay.
SPEAKER_09Just that whole vibe with the synthesizer behind it. To me, it's I don't know, it's very nostalgic. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04She knows how to walk away. She don't talk much, but she knows just how to air.
SPEAKER_09Uh then he's got a couple of slow ones, but they're very cool. This is called The Red Plains. This is one of my favorite songs from the album. Cause it's well, it's like this for the whole for the verses. And these are all from The Way It Is, which is a debut album from Bruce Hornsby in the Range. And then, of course, they would put out uh at least one more album as the range, Bruce Hornsby in the Range. And they had a couple bunch of hits off that as well. And then I think it it was I he they did a uh couple soundtracks. Um what was the uh oh what was the Baywatch one? I don't know. Baywatch, this one right here. Uh so I remember a one Baywatch episode started uh with this this song right here. And I and I the song builds the beginning, and you know, you're seeing like the beach and everything. Is that where Baywatch took place? Yes, and then when the song kicks in the mountains. When the song kicks in, I think it it cuts to like David Azloff? No, uh uh girls in bathing suits running. I think Oh, that never happened in Baywatch. I'm pretty sure that's I'd have to look at it again, but that's all I remember. What else do you need to remember? Right here is where it kicks in. Anyway, I I distinctly remember this in a Baywatch episode. Not that I watch Baywatch very often. No. But I saw that episode and I was like, oh, Bruce Hortons.
SPEAKER_11I'm I'm just it's like I read Playboy for the articles. I watch Baywatch for Bruce Hortzman.
SPEAKER_09Playboy had some pretty good articles, though.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_09They really did.
SPEAKER_11I don't remember reading anything.
SPEAKER_09Not even stats. There were words? Not even stats? No. No. Like hobbies?
SPEAKER_11No. No, I just I don't remember any words period. Okay. Alright. Did you read that Playboy? Nope. Did you see it? Oh yeah. Define Reed. If Reed if you buy read, you mean stare at the pictures. Yes, yes. I did read that.
SPEAKER_09So anyway, but that is the album. Bruce Hornsby and the Range the Way it is, their debut album from 1986. 86. I also just noticed that uh three of the songs on the album were produced by Huey Lewis. Oh, there we go. There you go. He was all over the place. He was all over the place. Alright, that's it.
