SPEAKER_03Um back to school. You are officially well, sort of. First day is tomorrow with freshman only. Right. And then full day.
SPEAKER_21But but the middle school and the elementary.
SPEAKER_03No, no. So just the high school. Um but it's I'm still in school, so I'm doing all kinds of I've been I've been working in the past two days getting stuff ready and and I'm trying to do the elementary stuff too, even though I have a couple weeks more to do that. Right. It's just it's you know, I I'm spent at the end of the day already. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_21You know, I'm putting a lot of you had a couple months off, so it's like, you know, now you gotta get back into the grind. Right. So yeah, it makes sense. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh let's see. What happened since the last time we had a podcast? We had a syndicate show. We had two syndicate shows. That's right. Yeah, because uh Sunday was uh Washburn. And no disrespect to Washburn, but uh they need to uh um I don't know, I don't know how how how would I put that?
SPEAKER_21Well, it's like it's a listening crowd. At least yeah, it's very much a listening crowd. A listening crowd. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03They were not a uh They're not a dancing crowd.
SPEAKER_21Nope, not a dancing crowd. Well, there's a couple, but not really an excitable crowd.
SPEAKER_03Not really, just a just a listening crowd.
SPEAKER_21They were just kind of like, yes, this is nice. We like doing this on a Sunday afternoon.
SPEAKER_03And you know, they did come up out a lot of them did come up afterwards and said, You guys are amazing, this was great, and thank you for coming, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. You know, and and it was just hard to play.
SPEAKER_21It really was. It was it was hard. I I I I felt the energy was not there. Not the same energy we had in Madawaska.
SPEAKER_03Right. So Friday we played the Acadian Festival in Madawaska, and that's we say it all the time, it's our favorite place to play. Yeah, and it is because I mean they are into it.
SPEAKER_21Into it. They are dancing, mind dancing, singing, they're they're you know cheering and hooping and twerking. Oh, that was that was disturbing.

SPEAKER_21Because when I say twerking, I don't mean it was some girl with a nice butt. No, it was a dude. And he was probably like 70. He was probably in his 50s, 60s.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, no, he was older than that. You think so? Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, I was I was disturbed. Yeah. Well, I I remember I turned around to Chris and I was like, awkward. And Jerusalem told me on Sunday, she's like, I started laughing you turned to Chris and said that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. No, I said some things too, but I we won't go uh into it.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, it was uh it was disturbing, but it was uh yeah. But it but they are a fun crowd.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_21They're a fun crowd.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_21So and we were and the the nice thing was is that it was only us. Yeah. Yeah, there was no opening bands. Yeah, there was no other musical act, it was just us, so they showed up early. Huge crowd. It was a big crowd. Because you know, before we're always like, well, we you know, there's a lot of people here already. Who knows how many are here to see, you know. I mean, a lot of people stay. Yeah, you know, we're about to. But when you're the only one and there's nothing else to do, and there's nothing else going on, right? You're like, oh, okay. Yep. So this this is the crowd.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So and um they've already booked us for next year.
SPEAKER_21I know, yeah. They're they're they they love us and we love them. So it works out well.
SPEAKER_03It was great. So that yeah, that was a great show. Um what else? Anything else? We got a show Friday in Holton. We have a show this Friday in Holton. And then we have only two more shows after that, right? Three. Three. What's the third one? So Marshall?
SPEAKER_21We got Prescott. Oh, yeah, Prescott the the truck uh classic car something on Main Street again.
SPEAKER_03Yep. And then Marcel and then Easton. Yeah, I knew the the other two, but I forgot about the Prescott.
SPEAKER_21No, we're not. And then Skinny Elvis has a gig in between all that.
SPEAKER_03Crown Main Balloon Fest. Yeah, so that'll be fun. Um, yeah. So we got a lot going on musically.
SPEAKER_21Musically, we are bizarre.
SPEAKER_03Uh, we do have kind of a busy podcast uh today because I have a lot of music to listen to. Yes. Um because we're gonna go over September new releases. Um uh I want to hear uh well actually let's do the who-dis first. Let's get that out of the way. Uh we should have a Where you at? We should have like a music thing uh for one later. I wonder if I wonder if just on a whim.
SPEAKER_19I'm gonna go to YouTube and type in who does and see if see if there's like a probably not, but there's a song called Hootus.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um let's just listen to this for a second. Just for a second. Let's well, actually, let's just let's just use the beginning of it. It's time to play WhoDis. Yeah, no, I don't like it. I don't like it. Anyway, um and what this is, is a new thing that we're doing where we get uh suggestions from listeners about bands or artists that uh we may not know and we listen to it and kind of react to it. And we did this band last week, and it was your idea to kind of stretch it out. Yeah, a little bit.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, not do them all once.
SPEAKER_03Right, so um Bob the Painter Bob the Painter, yes we can suggested a band called Pussifer. I th I don't I still don't know.
SPEAKER_21I assume that's the the that's what I've been saying.
SPEAKER_03P-U-S-C-I-F-F-E R. I'm Pussifer. It's either Pussifer or Pussifer. I'm not sure. I'm going with Pussifer as well. Yeah. Um and we discovered, actually, you knew this, but uh, we discovered that it's Maynard James Keenan from Tool and the Perfect Circle. It's a different project that that he had going on. So Bob wanted us to listen to three songs. We started one last week, and we're gonna start number two uh today, and this is a song. He said, and I'll actually I'll read you uh verbatim what he said because it's it's important. Um and uh again, you know, we are uh playing these uh songs on the podcast, uh hoping that um uh let's see, hoping that we don't get caught because we don't know if we're what we're doing is illegal or not.
SPEAKER_21But well, under fair use, we can use them for commentary. Yeah, I think that's probably so I think we're covered.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so let's see. He said a song called Grand Canyon. He said, get at least Was it the other one?
SPEAKER_21What was the other one? The one we did last week, called it The Humbling River. Yeah, what what is what is this nature theme going on? Yeah, that's good point.
SPEAKER_03Uh the song Grand Canyon, he said, get at least to two minutes to get a sense of the song. Minute 340 to 450 gets experimental, and the vid and the video is kind of mesmerizing. So we'll just play the first couple minutes uh of Grand Canyon from Pussifer.
SPEAKER_21Now you can't fool me, that's a sunset. Probably in the Grand Canyon. I doubt it, I don't see a canyon anywhere. Still no canyon. This video is alive. Those are Joshua trees. It's definitely the desert.
SPEAKER_03That was a sense of the song, according to Bob. Yes. Um well, I'll go with you first. What are you what thoughts?
SPEAKER_21Well, it's it's in that same vein of like you said last week, Americana. Yeah. You know, it's that just kind of very simplistic you know, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03I really like it. I mean, it's and I gotta think one of the reasons that Bob likes it is because it's uh drone-like and relaxing.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, I get that. He probably could listen to it. That's probably why I don't like it as much as I like Tool or A Perfect Circle.
SPEAKER_03Well, I uh you gotta think that Bob the Painter, while he's painting, probably listens to Song.
SPEAKER_21Oh, sure, yeah. Yeah, I get that.
SPEAKER_03Um and I'm just speaking personally, so I'm speaking personally when I say I like this, but I also like songs and music that go somewhere. Right. And this this doesn't. It's not really it's nice, it's beautiful. Uh and and I think the word that he said about the video was mesmerizing. I think the music is. Well the video is mesmerizing. I think the music is too, kind of. Yeah. But it's just not, you know, I like songs.
SPEAKER_21But it's like a typical tool video, you know, like, you know, just weird images and nature and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, no, I I dig it. I dig it. It's just you know, it's it's a it's a drone. Yeah. Basically, is is what it is. Uh that's Pussifer and Grand Canyon. We'll hear one more song from Pussifer on the next uh episode. Next week, tune in more Possifer. Um I did want to uh share a couple of things with you. Um there is a band that I discovered uh just before you got here, actually. Um were they lost? Nope. Uh the article was Rush endorses this band uh after Devin Townsend basically uh trashed them. So Devin Townsend is a is a another rock artist, but he and he was actually you know, I don't know why you have to trash any band. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But trashing them is you know.
SPEAKER_21Um Well, I say unkind things about nickelback. That's true. Um I don't I don't mean it. I don't know that you trash them though. I don't trash them, because I I think they're good musicians. Sure. And they're good at what they do. Yeah, I just don't I just don't like it. There's a song or two that you like. I there's one song though. One s one song that you like.
SPEAKER_03One song. One single song. So um but uh Rush came out and said uh and endorsed this band. So I was like, I've never heard of this band. So I looked them up. And what I'd like to do is I'm gonna play because I found a a uh like a concert or or a performance, a full performance. Several songs, no audience, but several songs. So I find I figured I would just play a little bit of it with your eyes closed. So I want you I want you to close your eyes. That was like nap time for Doug. It's nap time nap time. I just want you to listen to the music. Alright. Uh it's important because then I'm gonna show you who's making the music. Okay. Okay? Alright. So go ahead and and close your eyes. Alright, I'm not looking at you! Do not look at this one. You better be wearing clothes when I open them again. This is a band out of Canada. It's a duo called Angie De Poitrine. And I looked it up, it basically means chest pain.

SPEAKER_21I mean, you know, with that with that loop pedal, yeah. I mean it makes sense because it's it's really I mean, they're really, really good at what they're doing.

SPEAKER_21I mean, the music's really good. I mean, if I I didn't, if I, you know, if I gouged out my eyes, I would be like, hey, this is really awesome. But you know, it just the visual is a little jarring. It is a little jarring. It's because it's just weird. Yes, like why? Yeah, why? I mean, I get it. I mean, you know, you're gonna be like, hey, you see the guys that look like, you know, yeah, something. You know, stupid looking Alice in Wonderland characters.

SPEAKER_21But I mean, the I mean it's a shtick. It is a shtick. I mean, it makes I mean, especially for just a duo. I mean, you got the black keys, they're a duo. Yep. But they don't do this.

SPEAKER_21So you gotta set yourself apart somehow. Right. So I get it. Yeah. Not not the direction I would go. Everybody needs something. Yeah, right. So I mean I get it. But musician-wise, A plus. Oh yeah. They're really, really good. Real good.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, I agree. Um, let's go to uh before we hear another piece of music, uh, which we're all very familiar with. Uh I'll talk to you that about that in a second. Uh, I want to do some rock releases for the month of September. Yeah. Uh and we only talk about new releases. We don't we try not to talk about, depending on the band. Uh reissues or concerts or um box sets, unless it's like a really important box set. Or a new box set. Uh let's see. Nope. Nothing there. September 1st. Okay. I mean, there's a couple of books. They're actually putting books on here now. Why? Um, yeah, I don't know. Because there's not a lot of music coming out of it.
SPEAKER_21I wanted to well, I suppose if you make them audiobooks, then I get it.

A new album, a new EP with uh Mickey Dolans of The Monkeys uh working with uh Andy Partridge from XTC, Paul Westerberg of the replacements, Vicky Peterson from the Bangles. Uh the EP is called Timeless. That also comes out September 4th.

SPEAKER_03I love all that behind the scenes stuff. Yeah. You know, that they put on there. It's historic now. You know? Right. Um, that's it for September releases. Uh I want to go over uh one other thing before I play some more music for you. And that other thing is that uh finally we're off the hook. We're off the hook. They don't own me anymore. Columbia House is shutting down after 71 years.
SPEAKER_21I can't believe that was still going on.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know it was. I thought it would shut down years ago, man. I I remember because there was a uh copycat called BMG. Yeah, and I was a member of that, actually. I used to get CDs and BMG all the time. But you would buy what is it like seven to ten records for a penny, and all you have to do is promise to buy one at full price that year?
SPEAKER_21Or that it seemed like it was like every month.
SPEAKER_03Was it every month?
SPEAKER_21That seemed it seems like it would have what it was, but it boiled down.
SPEAKER_03So you could get basically ten albums for the price of one per month.
SPEAKER_21No, no, you got the you that was the introductory deal. You got like ten CDs for a penny, but then you had to buy like every month. Every month, so it's a subscription. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So, but most people they got the 10 CDs and then they canceled. Then they just canceled it, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, apparently they've they've been going. Uh it was launched in 1955 by Columbia Records. Um after 915, September 15, 26, the Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders. Uh you can you can still purchase books with your credit card or credits as normal. Books. So they must have done books. I don't want books. They must have done books too. Oh, okay. Um by the mid-90s, it boasted more than 16 million members and was a significant force in the music industry, accounting for over 15% of CD sales in America. Sixteen million members, only five people are actually buying paper of the company regularly offered new subscribers 10 CDs for just a penny when they signed up. However, after successfully surviving many new changes in the music industry, Columbia House proved unable to handle the digital revolution. A failed merger with CD Now in 1999, foreshadowed future struggles. Uh anyway, um a series of ownership changes. They filed for bankruptcy in 2015, stopped selling music entirely, instead focusing on DVDs and Blu-rays. Um yeah, so they haven't been viable for 10, 20 years.
SPEAKER_21At least since the 90s, yeah.

SPEAKER_03Um, so this is the last piece of music I wanted to play because uh I think it's pretty cool. So Richie Blackmore, uh the legendary guitar player for Deep Purple and founder of Deep Purple, reached out to the band uh recently because they were going to be playing in New York, which is where Richie lives. And he's he's kind of a uh there's a lot of uh folklore about Richie Blackmore, about he was hard to work with and um just he's just a interesting fellow is a is a good way to put it. Um and very reclusive. Uh but he reached out to them to see if he could jam with them on on just one song after 33 years. And so they said absolutely. So he came out and w what song do you think he did? Yeah, you do. What song of Deep Purples do you think Richie Blackmore played? This is this is them bringing him out. Now keep smoke on the water. Oh now keep in mind Richie Blackmore is how old is he? Hold on.
SPEAKER_21Gotta be in his 70s. I think he's older than that. Could be.
SPEAKER_03He's 81. Okay. So I watched it, and my first reaction was he's not very good. Because I mean, most most guitar players from that era looked to Richie as inspiration, and and if you listen to old Deep Purple and even old Rainbow, right, he was amazing. Right. Um the solo that he did this night on smok on Smoke on the Water was not that impressive. But I soon was like, who cares? He's 81. He's not only is he 81, but he returned to the stage with this band. Yeah. You know, that's what it's all about. And people were criticizing him as well. And he responded to that criticism by saying, I don't care how I played. I was up there with my friends.
SPEAKER_21Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know?
SPEAKER_21Makes sense. Uh I hope we're still doing that at 81. I know, right?
SPEAKER_03Uh, here we go. Keep in mind he doesn't even play this music anymore. Yeah. It's like classical guitar and stuff. And the band was very gracious. Oh yeah. One of my favorite guitar players, actually. It's in Deep Purple now, Simon McBride. Oh yeah. Taking his hand and now those two, Ian Gillen and Richie Blackmore used to fight all the time. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah. And just to see them up there together is pretty cool. So bygones be bygones. Like a yeah, I mean, I mean, after after that long um playing together and, you know, I just think it was pretty cool. Yeah. Um a neat little reunion.

I experienced the exhilaration of being that kid leaving for college and ha and have also had my own children go off to college. Creams I feel free came to mind because going to college in the Boston area and being on my own completely after my freshman year was exciting. And as a parent, you hope your child can experience the same feeling. But also, as a parent, you experience pride and some sadness, and you wish all the success in the world for child. I have always said that the best thing you can teach your child is how to be independent. That being said, I will go with Forever Young by Rod Stewart. Oh wow. I know Bob Dylan wrote it, but I like Rod's version better. The lyrics are a little bit different. Honorable mention to Teach Your Children by Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young. And with Arms Wide Open by Creed, watching your child drive away, you can't help but think about when you became a parent.

It's an album I wouldn't buy, but maybe pull up some tracks on my streaming service from time to time. Oh, makes sense. I get that. Yeah. And it's funny that he says he likes the guitar on this song Surrender, because uh we heard from Bounce and Bob as well. And uh Bounce and Bob. This is what he said. Trash. I did not know the singer Gary Moore until I listened to this CD. The only Gary Moore I knew was the TV host from the 60s who hosted I've Got a Secret and To Tell the Truth. As far as the album is concerned, even Gary Moore trashed it. Tried to link blues with dance music, but failed. The lyrics were the worst. Look at the lyrics from the song Surrender.

SPEAKER_03He does a lot of JJ Cale. He does. Actually, there's one. There's two on this album. Does a Bob Dylan song, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Leroy Carr, some traditional blues stuff. This one's called Somebody's Knockin'. A lot more playing than singing on this album. Right. Which is, you know. Which is good. Which is fine. I I don't mind that at all. Um and the only reason. It's produced by Glenn Johns, by the way. Um legendary. I am a huge and you know, I'm a huge, huge Eric Clapton fan. True. Um I think it was back in the 90s he put out an album called Pilgrim. Yep. I bought it from Chris at Record Town or FYE or whatever it was. It's the first time I ever returned an album. Because he did kind of what uh Gary Moore did with that.
SPEAKER_21Well, didn't he have uh that change wasn't that Change the World song?
SPEAKER_03That was from a movie. No, that was from a movie. Oh, it was from a movie. It was not on that album. Okay, I thought it was from that. Um but he he partnered with Simon Clymey uh and and did a lot of like uh modern beats and and uh it was a modern production and not what I was used to. Right. And I was like, this is crap, and I returned it. I sucked in Leoxy. No, no, I sin I've since replaced it and it's awesome. I just I just didn't sit with it long enough. The songs, you know, the songs are awesome. Okay, um but since that album, everything Clapton has put out, in my opinion, has been just this draggy. Yeah, it's good, yeah, don't get me wrong, but it's not like you know, you know, he did that album. Um well the blues the the BB King album was fantastic. Yeah, it was really, really good. Um and the JJ Cale album was really good. Oh, the Robert Johnson album was really good. That was good too. Yeah. I'm not sure what where Pilgrim falls in line with all that stuff, but um just his output as he got older, kind of like Hyatt. Yeah, you know, just Hyatt just slowed down, just slowed down and it was sounded just very old.
SPEAKER_21Yeah. And it's become like grandpa music.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and and and uh and I'm not saying I don't like it, I do. Yeah, I love it, but it's just doesn't grab me the way it's other stuff.
SPEAKER_21You gotta be in a certain mood. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And so, but I still like it and I still love Clapton. Yeah. So I'm on the fence, so I need help. What uh I need somebody help! What should I do? And he's got another song in here. This one is written by one of my favorite songwriters, an Irish guy named Paul Brady. Song called I Will Be There. And I mean it's beautiful. So that's why I'm on the fence.
